Start-up Companies at UIUC: What You Need to Know

Back to main menu

I have a great idea for a start-up company, but I need help with things like developing a business plan. Is there anyone at UIUC who can help me?

  • Center for Enterprise Development (CED)
CED pulls together students from the Illinois MBA Program and graduate students from other university academic programs to provide professional services for entrepreneurs and those planning to start their own businesses. Services include preliminary competitive and marketing analysis and feasibility studies as initial steps in the creation of a business plan. The Center also conducts analyses for potential start-ups, as well as research on specific questions raised by potential entrepreneurs. Additional services such as comprehensive market or financial analyses or full business plan preparation may be directed to the regular consulting arm of the Office of Strategic Business Initiatives (OSBI).

  • Illinois Student Entrepreneur Education & Development Society (iSEEDS)
ISEEDS was founded in the Fall 2000 semester on the UIUC campus and has emerged as the only student-run organization focused on entrepreneurship. This group brings together an eclectic mix of talented UIUC students from various colleges across campus and offers members a venue to explore entrepreneurship and build lasting relationships.

  • IllinoisVENTURES
IllinoisVENTURES, LLC provides start-up business incubation services that completes and complements the University of Illinois' portfolio of commercialization resources. Created by the University of Illinois' Board of Trustees, IllinoisVENTURES works to catalyze the creation and accelerate the early development of potential companies based upon University technologies.

There are two IllinoisVENTURES offices located at the University of Illinois Chicago and Urbana-Champaign campuses, and both offices employ a professional staff with extensive experience in industry, start-up and private equity investing.

  • Office of Strategic Business Initiatives (OSBI)
The Office for Strategic Business Initiatives has served corporate, entrepreneurial, and non-for-profit clients for the past six years, engaging consulting teams of MBA students to address business needs and concerns. OSBI operates under non-disclosure business agreements allowing it to address sensitive and often vital aspects of its clients' businesses. Under the guidance of business and academic professionals, MBA teams provide out-of-the-box thinking beginning with the simple question: "What is the true business problem to be solved and how can we help the client?"

  • Office for Technical Consulting Resources (OTCR)
OTCR is a highly motivated consulting firm organized by extremely proficient students at the University of Illinois. The OTCR staff is dedicated to providing successful, innovative and practical solutions to a diverse clientele.
  • Technology Entrepreneur Center (TEC)
The mission of the Technology Entrepreneur Center is to support technology commercialization through education, research, and network building. Initiatives undertaken to carry out TEC's goals include creating an entrepreneurial curriculum in the U of I College of Engineering, building a network for University alums and supporters interested in assisting young technology companies, and hosting events that promote and showcase these companies.
  • Technology Research, Education and Commercialization Center (TRECC)
TRECC is designed to accelerate the development of innovative ideas, create new education applications and learning systems, demonstrate on-the-horizon information technologies, and incubate start-up technology businesses. The Center assists Illinois companies in moving technologies from government and academic laboratories to the commercial sector, as well as introducing privately developed innovation to federal agencies. TRECC brings together expertise, opportunities, and facilities to make federal research and development more available for commercialization. It also acts as a venue to showcase emerging education, information, and collaboration technologies.
