Scholars' Program

Type
of Support
Research
Scholar Status: Typically, Research Scholars will
receive :
- A 0-time non-tenure-track
appointment in the academic unit of his or her discipline
and/or the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research
- The privilege
of applying for external support through the University,
which could include salary for the scholar
- The privilege
of applying to the Research Board for funding of their research
efforts of up to $10,000 during the lifetime of their appointment
as a Research Scholar
- Full faculty
library privileges
- An electronic
mail account
- Research support
services, such as clerical help, consistent with the level
of indirect costs recovered through external support
- The privilege
of using University letterhead with either the departmental
or Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research designation
- Campus mail
service, including a mailbox located in the endorsing department
- Telephone service
(messages and routing of calls)
- Space, to the
extent it can be negotiated
- A staff identification
card and associated privileges
- Faculty-staff
parking privileges
- Orientation
and materials provided to new academic staff
Please note
that Research Scholar status carries no commitment on the
part of the endorsing unit or the Office of the Vice Chancellor
for Research for a future appointment to the UIUC faculty
or staff.
Research Board Grant: A Research Scholar is
eligible to apply for support of their research of up to
$10,000 during the lifetime of their appointment as a Research
Scholar. An application for a grant may be made at any regular
Research Board deadline. Awards from the Research Board
are mainly in the form of research assistantships, equipment,
extraordinary supplies and other research expenses, publication
subventions, and travel to research sites. Requests for
other types of support may be considered if the request
represents a critical research need or an important opportunity.
Prior consultation with the Executive Secretary of the Research
Board is advised for requests for unusual types of support.
Scholars' Travel Fund: Research Scholars are
also eligible to apply for Scholars' Travel Fund awards
using the criteria and deadlines of that program. Funds
awarded are applied to the total maximum of $10,000 for
which Scholars are eligible.
Types of Support not Normally Funded: The
Research Board has identified certain types of support which
it does not fund except in extraordinary circumstances.
These include:
- Faculty
salaries
- Full-time
appointments of any kind
- Post-doctoral
research associates
- Research
technicians
- Computer
programmers, except where the primary focus of the research
is programming and the programmer is integrally involved
in research
- Graduate
research assistantship appointments for greater than 50%
time, more than two months in the summer session, or persons
not currently enrolled as graduate students at UIUC during
the academic year
- Ordinary
research supplies and materials of the kind usually available
in departmental laboratories, storerooms, and libraries
- Travel
to meetings and symposia
- Principal
sabbatical leave destinations
- Travel
for graduate students
- Page
charges for publication of research articles
- Book
publication subventions for non-refereed or commercial press
- Preparation
of an index for a publication
- Funds
for computer time on UIUC computers
- Database
creation from existing data
- Dissertation
project research costs which are not clearly also faculty
research costs
- Construction
and remodeling of facilities
- Equipment
maintenance costs
- Non-research
costs.
